I went to see this band live every time they came over to Europe from 1997 on. In 2007 I witnessed my last Deftones show with bassist Chi Cheng in Amsterdam. On November 4, 2008, Chi was seriously injured in an automobile crash in Santa Clara, CA. Chi was traveling with his sister, Mae, when their vehicle flipped three times after hitting another car going 60 mph. Cheng, who was in the passenger seat, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Mae was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. She attended to Cheng, holding his head until two off-duty EMTs, who happened to have their medical equipment, rendered aid. They were able to insert a tube into Cheng’s throat to help him breathe until the ambulance arrived, an action that doctors later said helped him survive. The crash left Cheng in a coma.
Shortly after his accident the One Love For Chi website was founded, which got me in contact with site founder Gina Blackmore and Chi’s mother Jeanne Marie Cheng aka ‘Momma J’. A drawing I made of Chi in 1998 was used on their merchandise to raise money for Chi’s treatment. The shirt design was first a poster which is shown here.
On April 13, 2013, oneloveforchi.com reported that Chi had passed when he fell into a cardiac arrest after he was rushed to a hospital. To honor Chi I decided to re-do my original 1998 drawing and create a poster again. This version was later a give-away for another website, founded to honor Chi: buckleupforchi.com. Buckle Up For Chi serves as a tribute to not only the legacy Chi left behind, but to the lives that will be saved because of seat belt awareness.
RIP Chi! One Love.
